Its status is reflected in the hosting of numerous major tournaments, including the annual Gold Coast Open initiated in 1959 and today recognised as one of the most prestigious events on the city's annual golfing calendar.
The Club's reputation is also enhanced by its focus on environmental management projects. These include the recent commissioning of a water treatment plant that won the 2007 Environmental Award for the Queensland Golf Industry. This project, which also received the year's premier award from the Australian Golf Course Superintendents' Association, compli
es with the Environmental Protection Act and has set the standard in golf course environmental management. The Club's committment to practising best practise environmental management in the day to day operation of the Club now includes the implementation of the internationally renowned EPAR program as shown below.
Growth in our region continues unabated, so by location alone we have not only a prized asset but also an ongoing responsibility to maintain - and improve on - the high standards already established. The strategic planning for the Club focuses on continuous incremental improvement of the golf course and facilities for the members.
A key factor towards this objective is our Strategic Management Plan (SMP), initiated in 2001. Works programs in all stages of the SMP are designed to cause minimal disruption to play, and improvements already completed have certainly enhanced our course and won members' enthusiastic endorsement.
Membership is carefully capped to ensure that overcrowding does not impede play, so that competition and social rounds can be enjoyed without pressure.
Southport Golf Club provides a perfect environment to forge new friendships and the camaraderie amongst our members is a distinguishing feature of our clubhouse atmosphere.
